You’ve fallen in love with the triathlon. Participating, and not just watching. And so you’ve started training and the training seems to be going well so far. You feel good about yourself and you want to take your relationship with the triathlon to the next level.

It’s time to step things up a notch and enter the half ironman.

Half Ironman – Definitely Not Half a Challenge

Don’t be deceived by the title of this triathlon. It may be called a half ironman but there is nothing easy about it.

A half ironman, also called Ironman 70.3, is one of a series of long-distance triathlon events put together by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). The “70.3” refers to the total distance (in miles) the half marathon covers. Just like any other triathlon, the half ironman consists of a swimming stage (1.2 miles), a cycling stage (56 miles), and a running stage (21.1 miles). The distances covered in the swim, bike, and run stages of the triathlon is half of the Ironman Triathlon, hence the term “Half Ironman”.

I’m sure from the half ironman distances above, it is evident that the half ironman triathlon is no child’s play. In order to complete a half ironman event, you have to prepare yourself very well for it. In case you didn’t know, the average time to finish a half ironman triathlon is 6 hours. That’s 6 grueling hours of consistent muscle use.

Ever since the inception of the Ironman triathlon events in the 1970s, they have been the pinnacle of endurance competitions world over, and the half ironman triathlon is the most popular – attracting hordes of participants.

3 Reasons You Should Participate in a Half Ironman Triathlon

Perhaps you’ve been thinking of upping your game to the half ironman but you’re not completely convinced it’s the right challenge for you. Well, let me give you 3 reasons as to why you should go the half ironman route.

1. A Way to Challenge Yourself

If you’ve never done the half ironman triathlon before, you should. The training regimen puts a whole new twist on endurance training. If you’re looking for your next athletic challenge, you will definitely find it in the half ironman. As a beginner, the training regimen itself will stretch you beyond your normal limits – bringing out the Ironman in you. You’ll never be the same again after running the half ironman – in a good way that is.

2.  A Step Towards Ironman

The half ironman is the best way to prepare yourself for the ultimate test in endurance – the ironman. Being a step above long distance running, the half ironman is the perfect way to transition to more intense distances and training regimen. Once you have run the half ironman triathlon a few times, you will definitely be ready to tackle the big one.

3. Test Your Limits

The human body has its limits, obviously. But limits are relative – they vary from individual to individual. This is why the half ironman triathlon is something you should consider. It is one of the best ways to test your limits as it places a demand on every muscle of your body and challenges your mental resolve as well.

Preparing for Your Next Half Ironman

It takes a lot of hard work and determination to participate in a half ironman triathlon. You need to prepare yourself well enough to make sure you not only participate but that you leave a mark on the event. Here are a few areas you need to focus on in order to achieve your half ironman triathlon goals.

They say you are what you eat. This couldn’t be any truer than in a half ironman event. Nutrition plays a big part in your preparation as it determines your muscle build up and general health. To keep your body in optimum condition, it is important that you keep tabs on the quality of food you eat. Avoid refined foods as much as possible and try and focus on a high carb diet.

Preparing for a half ironman demands that you follow a strict training regimen. Your training should cover all muscle groups as well as a good cardio. Consistency is key as you will need to keep your body at constantly at its peak this will pay off well as you tackle the demanding ironman distances.

Mental Stamina

A half ironman, or any other endurance event, is not all about physical strength, it also requires a very strong mind. Mental preparation is vital if you are to remotely have a chance of making it in any half ironman event.
